Legend has it in fact, that John Wayne rode his horse right into the EI Rancho' bar and ordered two beers one for himself and one for his mare The hotel has been beautifully restored by its current owner, Armand Ortega. Make sure to visit the hotel lobby and second floor even if you are you spending the night.
